theyre young and tough, and especially wonderful too, easily one of the most compelling harmony soul groups to ever hail from the windy city! the sets a chicago soul gem from the early 70s, recorded with a laidback, slightly tripped-out vibe thats different than the tighter styles of other groups from the same scene, definitely righteous at points, with some of the superbad modes you might hear from an east coast lineup like the delfonics or soul generation, especially when they were trying to get a bit more conscious in their message. arrangements are great – handled by tom tom washington, eugene record, and cliff davis, very much at the best brunswick mode, but again with a deeper sort of vibe too. the title cuts a monster, and a very fitting follow-up to their earlier sly, slick, & wicked track – and the album features 2 versions (vocal and instrumental) of a cut called this is the lost generation, a very righteous soul groove with a heavy production tip.

german native sis shot into the limelight in 2008 with releases on cecille and ricardo villalobos label * sei es drum*, which up until that point had only showcased ricardos own productions. no stranger to the crosstown rebels catalogue, he delivered the first ever rebellion release and then later the * round pen ep* on crosstown rebels in the summer of 2012 and the more recent * slider* on rebellion. other productions have appeared on esteemed labels such as cocoon, 8bit, connaisseur, get physical, with a more recent album on cocolino.

embezzlement society takes us back to the early days of 80s hip-hop with his ‘rough quarters ep. on his record the man from belfast heavily relies on funk-based drum loops as were popular in the glorious days of old school hip-hop. the results are two super casual tracks with a cool hip-house attitude just perfect for hip-house lover drei farben house who took the chance to contribute a remix in his slick and smooth style, merging the raw drums with some tender rhodes. tenderpark regular roman rauch finishes off the ep and slows down the tempo in his remix concentrating on the originals of the samples and displaying his mastery with the mpc once more. as always all tracks have been mastered and cut by helmut erler at dubplates & mastering.

flipping to the aa, seasoned jock, derek kaye has reworked holding on and in the process landed it (and a few others!) in greg wilsons top edits of 2014 chart. by now, you must know that we are very fond of a bit of cheese in our whiskey… rulefinn sidesteps the usual elements of la biondas i got your number to focus on the slick guitar, while retaining the vocals until the end for optimal impact.

the globally trendsetting house and techno family that is visionquest now turns to a new pairing of sonny fodera & gene farris for their debut ep on the label. entitled ‘we work it’, the two-track affair comes with a remix by visionquest man lee curtiss. australian sonny fodera has been at the sharp end of the dance music scene for years now, clocking up huge hits both solo and with green velvet aka cajmere, releasing albums such as afterparties & aeroplanes and appearing on cajual, defected, suara and many more top labels. gene farris, of course, is a chicago house legend who has been active since the nineties, runs his own farris wheel label and has released close to one hundred definitive eps on relief, soma and many others. up first, ‘we work it’ is a lithe ritual of house funk with bent synths and slick mid tempo drums. a spoken word vocal snippet muses on the intake of various substances and the drums roll on infectiously below. it’s sure to be a standout anthem in the months to come given that vocal line and the spiritualness of the keys all around only adds to the effect. the first remix comes from lee curtiss. this one is a much quicker and more peak time bit of tech house with textured, dynamic bass and plenty of drum fills. it’s an involved, more cosmic and tense take on the original, that will build great pressure on the dance floor. all in all this is another on point package from visionquest that will get played far and wide

low-down and dirty jazz goes right back to the early 1900s in storyville, after the bands had played their hot tunes in the evening for dancing couples, the musicians would head off to the after-hours joints and play a less energetic but more bluesy kind of music, enabling them and their late-night audiences to get through to the early hours of the morning without suffering total exhaustion. and nobody in new orleans laid into the blues so low down and dirty as buddy bolden, whose funky butt became a staple in the repertoire of the citys early jazz bands.
jacksonville, florida, 1960. charles hungry williams mentors young clayton fillyau after he had just joined the james brown band: *i dont care where you put it on those drums, remember where 1 is and you ll never lose the time. listen to hungry on huey smiths *talk to me baby* and then listen to how clayton turns it into a relentless breakbeat on james browns *i ve got money*. earl kings *trick bag*, prefiguring the meters, is as good an example of early new orleans funk as can be found.

though the iconic imagery of disco feels distinctly tied to the united states, the style had a wide-reaching influence that made it’s way to africa. while africa was already no stranger to the pulsing rhythms of funk, afro-beat, and highlife, the rise of disco added a slick sheen to the music, with musicians from all over the continent incorporating elements of the genre into their sounds. would there ever have been a studio 54 in ghana in late 70s, these would have been the recordings that would have packed the dance floor with their deep root in disco, soul & funk! an album recorded in the late 70s packed full of legendary musicians such as harry mosco and many more… to be re-discovered 35 years after it’s initial vinyl release as a private press. a “disco documentary full of funk” proves that it stands the test of time by sounding as fresh and original as any other sought-after disco / soul funk lp from the west coast of africa in the late 70s. bbe went on another crate-digging journey and found the original producer reindorf nana oppong and the original master tapes were dusted off, transferred to digital. in the process of this, even un-released material was discovered on the tapes, which makes this a rather special package. “nana love - disco documentary full of funk” is one special journey through afro disco & boogie in the late 70s, and we at bbe can guarantee that you won’t be disappointed!!!

welcoming warrior one to losing suki, the man like carl faure has been knocking out some killers for labels like black butter, catskills and king pigeon over the last few years, and for suki he shines a light upon the garage house hybrid sounds…. title track 5ths kicks things off with the kind of punchy garage house swing that never fails to move you, airhorns and synth sweeps pepper the cut whilst a thundering double 99-esque bassline throbs hard and heavy. flipside, the reverberating keys and mc licks of nyc continue warrior ones indulgence of the classic us house sounds but with a slick production for the modern dancefloor. closing track only you presents orgasmic pads and tough garage beats, its meaty bass touching the spot, a sweet slice of when rave met garage (somewhere in a field off the m25, most probably).

our favourite swedish house duo is back…more dirty than ever! the follow-up to the previous eps moody & trapped is nothing short of brilliant. waisted with its plucked strings is classic deep house held together by a bumpy groove, soulful vocals & slick keyboard but still maintaining the formula that defines dirtytwo and their finest work to date. talking 2 u is where dirtytwo gets deep down and gritty. chunky house chords, a meaty bassline, cut-up voice samples in full basement effect. flip over for the hard on edit of talking 2 u which goes one step further adding some acid lines and a raw basement feeling. a dub for those who seek a more raw and heavier tool. local talk is talking to you!

after several years in the wilderness- perpetual speculation to his identity and numerous botched attempts at naming the man (or woman) behind the bear- finally a physical yolo bear release is available - 4 surefire club tracks that are as at home in jersey hood spots as they are in scottish basement clubs or luxurious european rooftop parties. opener bad bxtches starts things off at a dynamic pace- before that good good smooths things out like a hyperactive love ballad. show and tell features enhanced slick talk from nycs chippy nonstop before we are finally serenaded by the romantic intentions of freeki ho. add to this the yolo bear mantra dj tool and we have a complete package that provides us with a great introduction to the most smart/casual bear in the mens department.

mike gill who has already featured on roots for bloom teams up with taymor zadeh to bring us the coppin a feel ep featuring a john dimas remix. the a side *coppin a feel* brings us hard hitting groove with a hypnotic vocal line carrying the track. loose percussion and bold tom drums really cement this to work on any dance floor. the b side cut *the message* is a more rolling groove with a strong rhodes line that features later on really making the track evolve. john dimas takes *the message* and takes the atmosphere up a notch, with slick cut up vocals. this one will work in the early hours.

r&s keep things in the family with mpia3s brother tessela dropping his debut ep for the label. since 2011, ed russell has been moulding a style of dance music as tessela that has evolved to become a distinctly futuristic animal that is equal parts rave, jungle and techno as it incorporates classic breaks into delirious new mutations. the three tracks on this ep all follow on from his superb *hackney parrot* track but evolve his sound even further. nancys pantry combines bruising kick drums and some slick editing of the think break, before plunging headlong into thundering techno. horizons percolating hi hats and rough-hewn percussion roll off repeating chords that recall the heady days of rave. gateways uncomplicated arrangement of high hats, sub bass, siren like synths and quaking kick drums rattle through the tracks chassis and club soundsystems. early supporters to the tracks include ben ufo, pariah, surgeon, pearson sound and paul woolford, testement to what might be tesselas most lethal offering yet.

russian ol and scottish ¥oin are two young producers with something to say. on the ascent as emergent artists and off the back of excited feedback from their respective solo releases on error broadcast & tuff wax, ol & oin are in collaboration mode for the sink ep on fine grains.

lower east, the brainchild of cozzy d & lee brinx, returns with michael jansons brand new single *addiction*. following his debut release *i know you re feeling ok*, jansons returns with this slick new offering, stamping his authority as one to watch for 2013. title track *addiction* kicks off the proceedings and is deceptively ambient, before jansons drops in a pulsing bassline that rolls out under mizbees eerie yet classy original vocal.
*addiction* is given the remix treatment by none-other than detroit dub master marc mk kinchen. mk retains the deep, gritty and brooding elements of the original, adding his own trademark organ riffs. on the flip side *just us* deliver a more uplifting affair, with a precision bassline and chopped and cut vocal samples adding a touch of soul to give the record and overtly classic house feel.

the first of two remix discs of ivanos excellent lp. up first are bristol residents outboxx who bring a slick electro vibe to 113. chilled and melodic with a classic sounding b-line, this is one of the best remixes to feature on the label to date. flip for two remixes by roger gerressen, a member of the eshu collective along with mr tetelepta. his 117 remix is a slick house affair again with the b-line very much in the fore. his take on 119 is a much deeper affair, dubbed in its outlook with the melancholic piano stabs of the original a main feature.
